As the September 16th date for the 2023 TENARKY District Rose Show draws closer, excitement is building. Everyone is working hard to make this an enjoyable event for all TENARKY members and all those who just love roses. TENARKY District Director and Rose Show Chairman, Lori Emery declared, “We would like to invite everyone to attend this exciting rose show. There will be roses from all parts of the TENARKY (Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky) District and surrounding states. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the beautiful roses. Each rose will be labeled so you can select your favorite rose to add to your garden. The rose show will be open from 1:00-5:00 and there is no admission.” “Our Rose Show will honor Dr. Mark Windham for his love of the rose and many years of dedicated service to all the TENARKY Rose societies. The entire rose industry has benefitted from Dr. Windham’s rose research in the fight against rose rosette. We are all so appreciative of Dr. Windham,” concluded Lori. 2023 TENARKY District Convention Chair, Kathy Brennan, stated, “Everyone is so happy to be together for the joyous occasion of celebrating 77 years of honoring the rose thanks to Mrs. JE Darr, Knoxville. Tennessee was very active in the early beginnings of the American Rose Society and especially Knoxville. We hope everyone will attend and see the beautiful roses. We are so fortunate to have our Rose Show at the University of Tennessee Agriculture Campus in the Biotech Building at 2505 EJ Chapman Drive. Many thanks to James Newburn, Interim Director of the UT Gardens, for his Sponsorship on the UT Agricultural Campus for this District Event. There is no football game this weekend so parking will not be a problem,” Kathy continued. “Paul Zimmerman will be our special guest during the rose show from 1:00-3:00 and will be available for everyone to meet and greet and will have copies of his book, Everyday Roses to sign for us. Paul has years of experience growing roses to share with us and has a refreshing philosophy regarding growing roses. Paul has stated that he started Paul Zimmerman Roses Consulting and Design around one simple message that roses are nothing more than flowering shrubs and that is how you should use and treat them. His goal is to make roses less intimidating. Is that not a refreshing approach to growing roses?” continued Kathy. This exciting venue is perfect for inviting everyone to enjoy a bit of Tennessee hospitality and see one of the most exciting rose shows that will be open to the public at no charge after rose show judging has been completed on Saturday September 16th. Also, this is an opportune time to visit the UT Gardens-The State Botanical Garden of Tennessee at 2518 Jacob Drive. The UT Gardens function as an outdoor laboratory to evaluate the performance and landscape use of every type of plant, from trees and shrubs to annuals and perennials. The gardens feature a children's garden, formal rose garden, a sustainable kitchen garden, perennial borders, a beautiful Hosta collection as well as annual beds, huge old growth trees and seasonal displays. Within the UT Gardens, visitors will find the Beall Family Rose Garden which was completed in 2009. There is a collection of over 120 roses including hybrid tea, grandiflora, floribunda, miniature, shrub and climbing roses. There are two waterfalls supported with twenty tons of Tennessee sandstone cascading down to koi ponds and a beautiful 22-foot gazebo. We hope everyone will mark their calendars for this special event and come see the beautiful roses that are grown in our area.
